18-19 SEPTEMBER 2020

FESTIVAL EVENT 2020

online via zoom
Writing Women into the Heart of History in Historical Fiction
Meg Keneally and Pip Williams with Nicole Abadee
Date:  Saturday 19 September 2020
Time: 10.00 - 11.00 AEST
Location: Zoom video conferencing app. To set up zoom download from zoom.us/download.
Women are often ignored in historical accounts but historical fiction gives writers the opportunity to put women’s lives back at the centre. Nicole Abadee talks to Pip Williams about The Dictionary of Lost Words, a parallel story of the development of the Oxford English Dictionary and The Wreck which gives us the story of a woman fugitive in 1820s Sydney.

Meg Keneally  has always been fascinated by the ocean and history, in particular maritime history and archaeology. A former SCUBA diving instructor, Meg still spends as much time underwater as she can. Meg also works in corporate affairs, after a career in journalism and public relations.

Her books include Fled and The Wreck which is her latest work. She is also the co-author with Tom Keneally of The Monsarrat Series of historical mysteries.

Pip Williams was born in London, grew up in Sydney and now calls the Adelaide Hills home. She is co-author of the book Time Bomb: Work Rest and Play in Australia Today (New South Press, 2012) and in 2017 she wrote One Italian Summer, a memoir of her family's travels in search of the good life, which was published with Affirm Press to wide acclaim. Pip has also published travel articles, book reviews, flash fiction and poetry. In The Dictionary of Lost Words she combines her talent for historical research with beautiful storytelling. She has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary and found a tale of missing words and the lives of women lived between the lines.
