Manal al-SharifManal al-Sharif, a women’s rights activist from Saudi Arabia was imprisoned in 2011 for driving a car. The official citation was Driving while female. Though Manal was jailed and publicly shamed, she helped to start the Women2Drive campaign and inspired a movement which culminated this year in women being allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. In 2012, Manal was recognised by Time as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World”, Her 2013 TED Talk has had 1.5 million views. Her memoir Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman Awakening, is an intimate story of her life growing up in Saudi Arabia.
